Notes (1st edition)?This scene was originally published by the Kyoto publisher Sato Shotaro in the early 1930s, with prints carrying a read publisher seal in the margin. It would appear that the publisher Unsodo obtained the remaining stock at some time, perhaps when Sato went out of business. Unsodo stock carry no publisher seal.

The Unsodo edition carries the dating of January 1941.

Shin Hanga: Temple in Snow

Artist: Takeji Asano
Format: Oban tate-e: 14.5" x 10.25" approx

Subject: The Silver Pavilion under a blanket of snow -Ginkakuji Yuki.

This was Asano's first commercial design and was produced in quite small numbers and now very difficult to find.

Takeji Asano was born in Kyoto. He underwent a long and intensive art training - first at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1919 and later at the Kyoto City specialist School of Painting with graduation in 1923. One of his teachers was Tsuchida Bakusen.

Publisher: Hanmoto (Sato Shotaru, Kyoto--active 1895-1931)

Date: 1930/31

Condition: Full size. A minor matt mark bottom left in corner, otherwise generally fine state.

Colour: Fine

Impression: Fine of 1st (and only) edition

浅野 竹二(あさの たけじ、明治33年(1900年)10月24日-平成10年(1998年)2月10日) 京都の日本画家、版画家。京都市立絵画専門学校で日本画を専攻、途中油絵に手をそめましたが、再び日本画に復帰、土田麦僊の率いる「山南塾」に入塾し、国画創作協会展に出品するなど日本画家として活躍しました。
